South Korea’s defense industry expands orders in Peru, Chile, Philippines

“On July 29, a military parade commemorating Independence Day was held in Lima, the capital of Peru. Hyundai Rotem’s K2 Black Panther tanks and K808 Baekho wheeled armored vehicles, each adorned with the South Korean and Peruvian flags, led the procession. This display came as Peruvian military authorities showcased South Korea’s main mobile weapons ahead of the final implementation of a basic contract worth 3 trillion Korean won signed with FAME, Peru’s state-owned defense company, demonstrating their commitment to operationalizing the equipment.”

“South Korea’s defense industry is targeting orders across all land, sea, and air domains in Peru. Hyundai Rotem is pushing to finalize main contracts for 54 K2 tanks and 141 K808 wheeled armored vehicles. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries successfully launched the Chimbote amphibious support ship, co-built with a local state-owned shipyard, and is aiming to secure the main contract for the introduction of next-generation submarines, two vessels, of the 1,500-ton class. Korea Aerospace Industries, KAI, is collaborating with Peru’s state-owned aviation maintenance company to pursue a next-generation fighter project involving around 20 aircraft.”

“Chile, seeking to balance military power with Peru, is also focusing on South Korean weapons. Hanwha Ocean has proposed a 2,000-ton custom diesel submarine for Chile’s navy to replace its aging German-made submarines and is preparing to bid for a multipurpose warship project with a 4,000-ton class frigate. Hanwha Aerospace is knocking on the door of Chile’s army modernization project by promoting the Tigon wheeled armored vehicle, specialized for Central and South America’s terrain where mountains and coasts intersect.”

“The Philippines, urgently needing to bolster its forces amid territorial disputes in the South China Sea, is operating a third military modernization program worth 49 trillion Korean won…”
