Vietnam’s parliament approves first nuclear project

“Vietnam’s parliament on Monday approved an agreement related to its first nuclear power project, marking a major step toward realizing Hanoi’s revived nuclear ambitions as electricity demand surges in one of Asia’s fastest-growing economies.”

“The project will be built by Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom and is expected to begin operating between 2030 and 2035. Rosatom is one of the world’s largest nuclear energy companies and already operates projects across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.”

“The Southeast Asian nation has two nuclear power projects in its power development plan — Ninh Thuan 1 and Ninh Thuan 2. Both were halted by lawmakers in 2016 because of concerns over domestic economic conditions and the huge capital requirements involved.”

“But in 2024, Vietnam’s ruling Communist Party agreed to revive the nuclear program, citing the need to strengthen energy security and support economic development.”

“On Monday, lawmakers also approved an additional $3 billion in estimated spending for a railway link to China, running from Vietnam’s northern border province of Lao Cai through the capital Hanoi to the major port city of Hai Phong.”

“The length of the track was extended to 426 kilometers, from 391 kilometers previously. The estimated overall cost was raised to 289 trillion dong ($11 billion), from 203 trillion dong in a previous projection. Vietnam said last year it would receive loans from the Chinese government for the project.”
