South Korea breaks ground on AI port testbed at Gwangyang

“South Korea’s Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) has begun construction of a fully automated container terminal at Gwangyang Port, designed to serve as a national testbed for domestically developed port technology…”

“The project centres on building a fully automated container terminal at Gwangyang Port’s Phase 3-2 site, using domestically produced cargo-handling equipment, container transfer systems and a port operating system. Total investment is set at 772.4 billion won ($523 million) through to 2029. The terminal will comprise four berths with a combined annual handling capacity of 1.36 million TEUs.”

“The testbed forms part of a broader national strategy, unveiled by the ministry in July, to transform South Korea’s ports into fully autonomous logistics systems using physical artificial intelligence.”

“Under that plan, Gwangyang Port will be used to trial the technology before it is introduced at the first phase of Jinhae New Port, scheduled to open in 2032.”

“The first phase of that wider infrastructure programme is valued at approximately 7.92 trillion won ($5.36 billion) and will include 198 autonomous port cranes, comprising 36 ship-to-shore (STS) units and 162 yard cranes, alongside 171 automated guided vehicles and an AI-based terminal operating system.”
