Japan to launch 8 projects in ‘digital corridor’ spanning Taiwan, India

“The projects are expected to involve Japanese telecom companies and other players. In fiscal 2026, initial testing and feasibility studies will be conducted in collaboration with local businesses.”

“In India, where data centers are springing up, the plan includes trials of NTT’s next-generation optical communications technology Innovative Optical Wireless Network (IOWN), which uses optical signals for all signals between data centers and terminals.”

“In Taiwan, the projects will test technologies to improve the performance of undersea cables linking Japan and the island. In recent years, these cables around Taiwan have frequently been damaged or severed, with many suspecting Chinese involvement. The tests will examine the levels of performance needed to ensure secure connectivity and compatibility with local standards.”

“In Singapore and India, the initiative aims to introduce technologies that enhance financial transactions such as payment services. In Chile, home to the world’s largest copper mine, there are plans for tests of remote operations using IOWN technology.”

“Funding for the projects will come from a combined 8 billion yen ($50 million) allocated in the 2025 supplementary budget and the main budget for fiscal 2026.”
