India, Japan seal warship stealth deal, raise concerns over East, South China Sea militarisation

“With Tokyo lifting its ban on defence equipment exports, New Delhi has moved to pursue co-production of military hardware in India with technology from Japan, even as the two sides on Thursday cleared the hurdles to jointly manufacture the East Asian nation’s UNICORN communication system that will enhance the stealth capabilities of Indian Navy’s warships.”

“The two sides also signed an agreement clearing the way for manufacturing Japan’s Unified Complex Radio Antenna (UNICORN) by Bharat Electronics Limited in India. The UNICORN is an integrated mast that combines multiple communication antennas into a single structure, reducing radar signature while improving communications and the stealth capabilities of naval platforms.”

“The technology was developed by NEC Corporation, Sampa Kogyo and Yokohama Rubber, of Japan, and was deployed on the Mogami-class frigates of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force. The Indian Navy will also deploy the UNICORN in its warships.”
