“The crossing sits near a narrow corridor where China’s territory approaches but doesn’t reach the Sea of Japan, which Koreans call the East Sea. For decades, Beijing has quietly pursued greater access to the area because direct access to the Sea of Japan would reduce its dependence on the Bohai Gulf on the east coast of mainland China and provide additional maritime options for commercial and military operations, analysts say.”

“For now, the Khasan-Tumangang bridge will create a North Korea-Russia corridor that bypasses China. The bridge is about 1 kilometer downstream from the Chinese border and 15 kilometers upstream from the river’s mouth. It will enable trucks, military logistics, industrial cargo and illicit goods to move directly between North Korea and Russia without relying on China’s rail or port infrastructure, the Reuters news agency reported.”
