Myanmar, China Launch Investment Body Under Junta Cronies’ Oversight

“Myanmar and China have launched a new business association with the goal of luring about half a trillion US dollars in Chinese investment to Myanmar by the end of the decade under the supervision of prominent junta cronies including Aung Ko Win of KBZ Group and Kyaw Win of Shwe Than Lwin Group.”

“The launch ceremony of the Myanmar-China Investment and Trade Promotion Association (MCITP) in Yangon on Saturday came shortly after the conclusion of the Myanmar junta’s staged, three-phase election, which was dominated by the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party, and received public endorsement from Beijing. The body was officially established in October.”

“[…] the MCITP reportedly aims to draw about $500 billion (3.5 trillion yuan) in Chinese investment into Myanmar between 2026 and 2030.”

“MCITP patron Aye Win described the association as a ‘bridge’ for business leaders of the two countries, stressing that the association comprises businesses from China, business leaders already investing in Myanmar and Myanmar businessmen. The association currently has 547 members—462 of them from Myanmar—and has signed MOUs with business chambers in Tianjin, Chengdu, Nanning and Yangon including the China Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, Pingzhou Gemstone & Jade Association, Wenzhou Enterprises Chamber of Commerce and Myanmar-Chinese Chamber of Commerce, as well as Chinese companies of various sizes.”
