Turkiye-Indonesia defence industry cooperation takes off

East Asia Forum

“Since the mid-2000s, Turkiye’s defence industry has experienced significant growth, with UAVs playing a pivotal role in this expansion. Baykar, a leading Turkish military drone manufacturer, garnered international attention for its Bayraktar TB2 drones, which have been deployed in conflicts in Ukraine, the Caucasus and Libya. As a result, Turkiye has emerged as a dominant player in the global drone market, accounting for 65 per cent of military UAV sales since 2018, dwarfing Chinese and US sales.”

“To strengthen its domestic defence sector, Indonesia passed Law Number 16 of 2012 on Defence Industry, requiring all defence procurements to include technology transfer and joint production agreements in an attempt to reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imports and foster local defence capabilities. The partnership with Turkiye aligns with these goals, offering Jakarta access to advanced UAV technology while ensuring that production and expertise remain within Indonesia. Under the agreement, Baykar will provide expertise in manufacturing, technology transfer and training, while Republikorp will oversee regulatory compliance, infrastructure development, certification of local experts and integration into Indonesia’s broader defence ecosystem.”
