Chinese carrier strike group nears PH

The Manila Times

“The move, confirmed by Japan’s Joint Staff Office (JSO), marks the furthest deployment of the CNS Liaoning (Hull 16) in the Western Pacific, shifting from waters east of Taiwan to a position east of Samar Island, placing it within close proximity to Philippine territorial waters.”

“While the Liaoning carrier group pushes eastward, another dimension of China’s maritime assertiveness has unfolded to the west of the Philippine archipelago.”

“In the South China Sea, a detachment of PLAN warships — including the newly upgraded Type 052D destroyer CNS Weinan (166) and the Type 054A frigate CNS Yulin (569) — conducted live-fire combat drills.”

“Meanwhile, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces shadowed the Liaoning group closely, with JS Umigiri (DD-158) tracking the Chinese carrier and Air Self-Defense Force fighter jets scrambled in response to the launches of J-15 fighters. The Japanese described the Chinese carrier deployment as ‘unusual in distance and intensity.’ ”
