China plans space solar station with half-mile-long arrays for unprecedented power
“We are working on this project now. It is as significant as moving the Three Gorges Dam to a geostationary orbit 36,000km (22,370 miles) above the Earth. This is an incredible project to look forward to,” Lehao, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), stated during a lecture hosted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).”
“Long envisions ‘installing a solar array 1km wide along the 36,000km geostationary orbit.’ ‘The energy collected in one year would be equivalent to the total amount of oil that can be extracted from the Earth,’ he stated.”
“Several countries, including the United States and the UK, are exploring this field. Like the Manhattan Project, this initiative is seen as a major undertaking with the potential to boost the energy sector rapidly.”
